Mt. Rushmore National Memorial

Mt. Rushmore is an American icon, very much off of the beaten path; but worth the effort of making your way to the Black Hills, of South Dakota.  The massive sculpture of President George Washington, President Thomas Jefferson, President Theodore Roosevelt, and President Abraham Lincoln, was created by Gutzon Borglum, carved directly into the granite mountain, beginning in 1927, and completed in 1941, by Gutzon’s son, Lincoln.

I am certain that my desire to visit Mt. Rushmore was birthed in the ending of Alfred Hitchcock’s magnificent movie, North by Northwest, starting Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint, about an ordinary businessman, living in New York City, who is thrust into a cross-country trip, which ends at Mt. Rushmore, as he clears his name and of course get the girl!

My original post card purchase, of Mt. Rushmore, came long before I had the opportunity to see this remarkable sculpture, in person.  This postcard is beautifully colored on linen paper, marked Genuine Curteich-Chicago, distributed by Black Hills Post Card Co., Deadwood, South Dakota, and I would guess it was from the 1940’s.

I remember buying this card when we went to Mt. Rushmore, I could not help myself, I hope you will not be offended.

They are of course joking; the sculptures are on only the faces of the four great Presidents.
