The Maxima Cloaca is Italian for greatest sewer, not a very romantic title or subject for a painting, and not in a palette, which I am normally drawn to; but when I saw Eckersberg work, I instantly wanted to take a closer look. I found it balanced and tranquil, with the solitary figure, on the desiganted path, appearing at ease, and I wishing I too was on a stroll in Rome.
