Hurricane Sandy

No one has ever become poor by giving.”

~ Anne Frank ~

The destruction Sandy brought is almost unfathomable.  The pictures which now define so many people’s lives and sadly their deaths are horrifically heart-breaking.  Our prayers are with you, and we offer our condolences.

I know that for many, today we find ourselves in some of the most trying times of our lives, not only in the United States, but around the world.  While Sandy has created havoc in the Americas, there are other natural disasters and man-made tragedies which are impacting human life, throughout the globe; and pushing us to what feels like a point of no return.

The thought of reaching out, to help someone else in need, is all but unimaginable for those facing personal hardships; but perhaps we can at least find a few moments to remember others who are dealing with the tragic results of this storm, in the Caribbean and in the United States, as well as time to “weep with those who weep” because of other adversities.

There are many well-known groups that are already organizing fund raisers and collecting donations to aid those who have been impacted by Sandy.  Whether you are able to donate food, clothing, household items or money; know that your contributions will be much appreciated.  I encourage you find an organization which you trust, and see how you can help.

However, I would also ask you to think about other ways you might be able to give a hand to those in need.  Is there a local family whose cupboards might be a bit bare, could they use an unexpected home-cooked meal or gift card to the grocery store?  Do you know an overworked mother, who would welcome a free baby sitter, for the night?  Is there a senior citizen, on your block, who can no longer rake their own leaves or get their storm windows up alone?  Can you make time for an afternoon at a near-by nursing home, to sit with someone who has no one else?   Do you know someone who could use a call, a card, or just a smile?

These can certainly feel like very dark days, and my heart with those who are dealing with so much pain; but I ask that we also remember that such trying times can provide us with the opportunity and motivation to rise up and be a shining light in the darkness.  That is all for now.
