To love a painting is to feel that this presence is… not an object but a voice.

Holiday on the Hudson

by

George Luks

An American artist, George Luks, (1867-1933), was born in Pennsylvania, traveled in Europe, living in Germany, before eventually settling in New York City.  He was part of the Ashcan school; a realist who worked as an illustrator, and eventually opened his own school of art.

He is best known for his urban portrayals; with an emphasis on capturing the truth of the moment, for the subject – rather than the setting or detail of the environment.   But Holiday on the Hudson, to me, is not so much about the individuals as it is about the color and motion.  This is a joyous and vibrant painting that speaks of anticipation and delight.  I hope you enjoy!

Art can never exist without naked beauty displayed.
