Public Square

“A man who never lost himself in a cause bigger than himself has missed one of life’s mountaintop experiences.
Only in losing himself does he find himself.”

In Public Square we seek to share information about non profit organizations and worthy causes, which our readers may want to become involved with through contributions of time, money, and talent; or may be able to enjoy and share with others.

This week, I would like to highlight the public library.  I am fortunate to live in a county with wonderful libraries and on-line resources.  Using our library card numbers, we can go on-line, from home and are able to access book and periodical catalogues from around the world; and I am able to request and reserve books and DVD’s!  For me, all of these services are free.

Libraries also offer literacy classes, and would be happy to give you the needed training to participate in this worth while activity, as well as book clubs, reading circles, and guest lectures.

I know that our local branches, especially with all of the budget cutbacks, desperately need volunteers.  Also, most libraries raise additional funds through book sales, and they are always interested in your donations.  Finally, remember that like so many other things of worth, what you gain will be in direct proportion to your efforts.  So make your way to library and take an older friend or neighbor, who does not drive, or a group of children who have not yet discovered the magic of books.

Some sites you may want to look at:  http://www.publiclibraries.com/ http://www.ipl.org/ and my personal favorite: http://www.ipl.org/

“The world of books is the most remarkable creation of man; nothing else that he builds ever lasts. Monuments fall, nations perish, civilizations grow old and die out, and after an era new races build others. But in the world of books are volumes that have seen this happen again and again and yet live on, still young, still as fresh as the day they were written, still telling men’s hearts of the heart of men centuries dead.”
