Did You Know?

Mercedes O. Cubria was the first female United States military officer who was born in Cuba.  She was born in 1903 in Guantanamo, Cuba, and immigrated to the United States, with her family.  In 1943, during World War II she enlisted in the Woman’s Army Corp, WAC’s, and was sent to England to study cryptography. 

She served with distinction during the Korean War, being awarded the Bronze Star, and being promoted to Major.  She retired in 1953, but was called back into service in 1962, to aid with the Cuban refugees, who were escaping communist Cuba. 

In 1972 she was promoted to Lt. Colonel and finally retired at the age of 70.  She had become known as La Tia, to thousands of Cuban refugees whom she helped welcome and relocate.  She died in 1980
