Poet’s Corner

Outside

 Looking In

I stand on the outside
and look in
it is a choice I made
years ago
though I am no longer certain why
I did not think
it would last a lifetime
but it has
I have lived my life like
an ambivalent college freshman
who keeps taking primer courses
checking off boxes
but does not pick a major
I do not want to commit
to the wrong course of study
as it may define my life
incorrectly
so I stand back
and observe
I keep thinking eureka is around the corner
but days have turned into weeks
and weeks to months
months to years
and now years to decades
time keeps moving
but I am standing still
I do not want to stand outside
any longer
I want to come in
and sit down
with you
is there room for me
