Action Update

“Iran is routinely criticized for its human rights record and continues to lead the world in executing juvenile offenders. According to the Human Rights House of Iran, the state has executed 19 people in the last month alone, and amputated the hands of five prisoners.http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/babylonbeyond/2010/07/iran-wife-and-brotherinlaw-of-human-rights-lawyer-held-hostage-by-authorities.html

There have been two significant developments in Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtianior story.  (http://thatisallfornow.com/?p=1394)

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil, in response to an online campaign, has contacted the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and offered Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtianior asylum, after initially stating that he could not ask world leaders to disregard their own laws.  One must believe that President Lula da Silva was positively pressured by the many united voices which have been raised to protest Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtianior’s treatment.  The world is still waiting to hear her fate, but it is encouraging that options are being presented.

It must also sadly be noted that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtianior’s attorney, Mohammad Mostafai, now has to deal with the arrest of his wife, Fereshtech Halimi and her brother, Farhad Halimi.  They are being held, away from their families, as the government tries to silence Mohammad Mostafai.  The authorities have stated that they will be released when Mr. Mohammad Mostafai presents himself, as if to ransom them.

Mr. Mohammad Mostafai has played a significant role in not only trying to aid Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtianior, but in helping the world to understand her predicament and that of so many other prisoners in Iran.  He has been responsible for saving 18 adolescents from the death penalty, as well as seeking pardons for others who were sentenced to be stoned; while working to raise awareness of judicial misconduct.

For the moment, Mr. Mohammad Mostafai whereabouts are unknown.  I continue to urge you to become informed and to act!
