 The Confab

Eastman Johnson

Okay, how did they get up so high? Where did that tiny bouquet of flowers come from, it seems rather chilly for fresh flowers. The innocents and simplicity of this painting very much appeal to me; the well bundled children, sitting on a rail, in the barn seem to be deep in thought, especially for such young ones.

The little girl, whose face we can see, almost seems like a porcelain doll, yet nevertheless she appears to be waiting for the older child, perhaps her sibling, to answer a real question.

Art can never exist without naked beauty displaced.
