To love a painting is to feel that this presence is… not an object but a voice.

 Road to Ogunquit

by

Clarence Chatterton

The Road to Ogunquit, has long been one of my favorite pieces, at the Portland Museum of Art.   Painted by Clarence Chatterton, who was born in New York, and spent thirty-three years teaching in Poughkeepsie, at Vassar College, the work captures a New England no-nonsense attitude, which might make one wonder if the subjects are headed for a holiday, which I believe they are, given their destination, or off to some less than pleasant appointment.

I also love the flag displayed on the back of the boat – very quintessential New England.

Art can never exist without naked beauty displaced.

~ William Blake ~
