The Former Grauman’s Chines Theater
We moved to California, the Los Angeles Area, Bell, to be exact, in what was the summer before I entered sixth grade. My father had brought us west, from Ohio, to Winslow, Arizona, and no matter how many coroners one might stand on, Winslow was not a good fit for our family – we need something else, thus California.
He was quite excited to show us Los Angeles, and especially Hollywood, pointing out the Capitol Building, where Frank Sinatra recorded his albums. My Dad loved LA, and thus he was the perfect tour guide, from the beach to the mountains, well, more like the hills in Griffith Park, it was always fun to see the world through his eyes.
At the time, many of the people whose hand and foot prints were enshrined at Grauman’s Chinese Theater were still around, and would pop up on Johnny Carson, and most definitely in the Late Night Movies.
I will never forget the thrill of walking around Hollywood Boulevard, for the first time, and the many times for many years later, of taking others to share the experience, which I must say was usually very similar to mine.
You find someone you know; you step into their footprint, and then bend down to see your hand in theirs.
It would be quite some time before I would go in to watch a movie, but eventually I made it in – I will always love LA!
Because I love postcards, and this one captures the exterior much better than I could, I offer you a look at Western Publications and November Company, of Los Angeles, California. I do not know the date, but based on how the people are dressed, I would say the early 1960’s.
