The First White House of the Confederacy

Located in Montgomery, Alabama, we happened upon this by accident, as we do with so many of the stops we make along the road.  I had gone to Montgomery to see the Civil Rights Memorial; after which we drove around the all but deserted downtown, when we pulled over to the First White House of the Confederacy, though closed; I was able to walk around the grounds.

Between the Memorial, Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, the Alabama State Capitol, and very city itself, I was already feeling quite reflective when I noticed where the First White House of the Confederacy had been placed – on Washington Avenue and S. Union Street – and a “One Way” sign!

I was a bit overcome with the irony, and thus I share it with you.

It is such a fine dance we must perform, when trying to honor our past, as a nation, preserving the truth, both good and bad elements, for the future; it is a dance, which in general, America does better than most.
