In His Own Words

Jack

Every Sunday morning his breath reeked with Jack

Talk about routine

Woke up in Brooklyn

But you live in Queens

New York City subway passengers can be so mean

You see

The same gold chain that in the light used to gleam

Was ripped off of my neck

As I was trapped in my alcohol soaked dreams

One shot

Two shot

Thirteen

Jack Daniel’s can be so mean

Every Sunday morning his breath reeked with Jack

He woke up bloody in the hospital

But wasn’t privy to the attack

He’s been reckless since they stopped stamping X’s on the back of his hands

You really only live once

It seems no one understands

So every day is spent like it was his last on this land

Live fast

Party hard

Die young

That’s the plan

A sober life

Not appealing

So boring

So bland

Every Sunday morning, his breath reeked with Jack

No recollection of the night

Everything went black

Life goes on around me

As the hours start to drown me

And the denial creeps up on me

Man, addiction found me

Fighting tooth and nail

So that the 12 steps won’t bind me

Insanity

Same results

And I left the old me behind me

Every Sunday morning, his breath reeked with Jack

His sister brings him up in meetings

How she wants him back

Mom tried to stay strong

Eventually she cracked

Relapsed

And the results of his choices

Left lasting effects

And dad

Couldn’t get it, no

He just couldn’t see

How the promise of a young man dissipated

Among waves of whiskey

The young man could not stop

There was no turning back

Found dead

Burglarized

Reeking of Jack
