Apple Picking

We have had one of those perfect Labor Day Weekends, light on labor, and heavy on all the activities, which proclaim a New England autumn is approaching.

A visit to a state fair, where we met Governor Chris Christy, and of course ate fried dough, among a few other delights, a drive through country roads to meet Carly Fiorina, dinner and music at a Greek Festival, a good long visit with our neighbor, stops at more than one farm stand for fresh produce, a few free acquisitions, after the hundreds of yard sales in Maine and New Hampshire closed up shop, purchases at my favorite second hand stores, a Labor Day picnic where a campaign for a governorship was announced, and where we also met Governor Kasich, Senator Graham, Governor Walker, and saw Carly Fiorina again, play time with the Gregan’s and dinner, and apple picking!

In the past, we have gone apple picking at a very old orchard, in Maine, where the trees are the primary attraction with all of their twisted and knotted branches. This year, as we have been spending so much time in New Hampshire, these past two weeks, we went to a new orchard, where the trees perhaps have less character, but the apples were just as beautiful.

????????????????????????????????????

Apple picking is very much a New England harvest-time activity, which offers a bounty that can last till Thanksgiving, depending on when you pick and how you preserve them.

It is about a dollar cheaper, a peck, to pick your own apples, but that is not why one ventures into the orchard. There is great pleasure in harvesting fruit from the trees which have born them since spring, and now surrender them into your hands.

I will be making at least one pie!
