The Talk

As children get ready, to return to school, this is a good time to have the talk. The talk concerns the fact that if your children are old enough, trusted enough, and responsible enough to be connected, then they are also smart enough to understand is that your job, as their parent, to protect them from cyberpredators to online malignancies.

While many parents think that children are not susceptible to cyberattacks, because they do not carry credit cards, or they do not have a checking account or some other financial profile, online, this is simply not true.

It is important that your children understand vulnerabilities and that you are aware of the text, messages, and photographs that they are receiving from friend and foe.

The best way to address this is both openly and engaging. Sit down with your children and have them bring their electronic devices, to the table, and together scroll through recent activities, discuss anything that you think suspicious or just concerning.

Are your children receiving inappropriate messages? Are their signs that they are being bullied? Are they receiving advertisements, which are age inappropriate? Are they being sent photographs, which could easily be misinterpreted? Do not make this an activity were your children feel scolded; instead explain to them that you too are under attack and being vigilant is a family activity. Let them know they you are available to answer any questions; and to go over anything they do not understand.

As children spend more time away from home, you need to stay more Connected.
