A View from the Road

A New Mexican View

NewMexico 162 - Copy

When driving across the United States, I often have a moment, usually on some long stretch of barren wilderness, where I imagine what it was like to leave a fine home in Boston or Philadelphia or Richmond and head west, in the 1800’s.  I think about those brave souls who packed a few crates and a suitcase or two, if they were fortunate enough to be able to afford the price of freight or had room in their covered wagon, and headed off into the unknown, dreaming about a better or at least different life.

I came across this view from a road in New Mexico, glad that I was driving on the highway and not riding a train; but in awe of the engineers and labors that created such remarkable and vast trestles.
