To love a painting is to feel that this presence is… not an object but a voice.

The South Ledges, Appledore (1913)
by
Childe Hassam
Have you ever wished you could be dropped into a painting? At the moment, I wish I were the woman in this painting, sitting on the rocks, starring out to sea, marveling at the beauty which God created. For those of you longing for brighter days, I offer: The South Ledges, Appledore, oil on canvas. It hangs at the Smithsonian, and captures Appledore Island, off the coast of Maine, where Hassam spent many a lovely summers surrounded by fellow artist, poets, and musicians, courtesy of Celia Thaxter.
Art can never exist without naked beauty displayed.
