In the Wild!

Wild Turkeys!

When we moved from California to Maine, we ended up living in a lovely home that was neatly tucked away in the midst of five acres of wood.  There were wild blueberries and raspberries growing in our woods, as well as Lady Slipper orchids.  Deer were abundant, as were raccoons, squirrels, and skunks.  We never grew tired of the wide array of wooded splendor, and truly enjoyed looking out the bay window, to see who would come to visit next.

During our first Thanksgiving there, I happened to look outside, from the upstairs window, to find my yard filled with wild turkeys.  They were picking over what was left of the garden, which was mostly covered by snow; but my what a sight!  It was the first time I had seen wild turkeys in the wild; and yes they fly!

A few weeks ago, driving from our hotel to Caroline’s house, I spotted these two turkeys, leisurely strolling through the woods, in North Andover.  We were late, and though Kate offered to stop, I said no – I had been able to enjoy them, and that was enough.

A few days ago, as we approached the street where the turkey’s apparently live, we noticed traffic was stalled.  The cars were gingerly making their way through the traffic, and it was several minutes before we saw why the drivers were inching their way forward.  This time, Kate did pull over, and I was able to snap these shots – the two walking down the street, crossing the road, and putting on a show for us all.  Happy Thanksgiving!
