Hannah’s Hats

It started with a small, soft, bonnet

which cradled your newborn head

telling the world you had arrived.

The purple and pink paper hats

said it was your birthday

and we gladly wished you well.

You announced your entirely unique self

with silly vibrantly colored caps,

adorned with pompons and tassels and ties.

A mortarboard proclaimed

you had mastered other people’s lesson plans,

and were ready to step out into the unknown.

Soon you will cover your lovely locks,

with a long, white, lacey veil,

as you become his bride.

But no matter what else sits atop your head,

I will always think of you, with the smile upon your face

as you put the yellow pillbox hat on your head.

In jubilation you stand proclaiming

I am here and

I am ready!
