Today Matthew Wayne Shepard would have celebrated his 35th birthday, had he not been beaten to death, simply for being gay. Matthew was a student at the University of Wyoming, when on October 7, 1998, believing he was being given a ride home, by Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, he was instead driven out of town, where his cries for help would be unheard. He was bound to a split-rail fence, beaten, and left to die. Eighteen hours later, a bicyclist, Aaron Kreifels, found his maimed body, and tried to get Matthew help; but it was too late. On October 12, he succumbed to the injuries and died.
If you are looking for a way to make a difference this holiday season, perhaps you will consider a gift that will help end bigotry, ignorance, violence, and hate.

For Neda, the HBO film about Neda Agha-Soltan, who was murdered in Iran, one year ago, can be viewed on YouTube, and should. The film documents the tragic events surrounding her death, and the restrictions placed on her family, regarding how they would be allowed to mourn her passing; but it also celebrates this woman’s life and legacy. It was excellent, insightful, and heartbreaking. Please watch.

Like so many things in my life, I came upon the Venus de Milo, the marble sculpture of the Greek goddess of love and beauty, by accident. I remember walking in the Louvre with my new acquaintances, Peter and John, and suddenly coming upon the statue, which truly was breathtaking. The following website provides a unique view of sculpture. It is an interactive examination, where by clicking on the various numbers, you are able to view Venus de Milo in an entirely new light!

I found this story rather impressive. It was refreshing to read about a group of young women who chose to stand on their principals; and how nice for the author, of the piece, to not paint them as radical extremist, but instead to rightly put them in the company of Sandy Koufax and Eric Liddell.
